Quarry Rock & Boulders
Cedar Ridge Materials currently sells six different kinds of quarry rock and boulder products. A brief description for each product in order from smallest size to the largest size follows:
2-1/2” MINUS QUARRY ROCK: The 2-1/2” Quarry Rock is a well-graded product with plenty of fines material to help it pack. It is a good road building material, similar to our 2” Single Pass crushed gravel product, but with a larger percentage of smaller rock and fines, typically 25-40% passing the 1/2” screen.
4” MINUS QUARRY ROCK: Our 4” Quarry Rock is a rock from an igneous formation and another good road building material, particularly for initial site development. The 4” Quarry Rock has a larger size rock and fewer fine materials than the 2-1/2” material, with typically 15-30% passing the 1/2” screen.
4” – 8” QUARRY ROCK: 4” x 8” Quarry Rock is frequently used for construction entrances and other situations, which demand a bony rock material. The 4” – 8” Quarry Rock has no fine material and is tightly sized within the parameters. This product is sometimes called light riprap or quarry spalls. When ordering the material, it is best to refer to it as 4” – 8” Quarry Rock to avoid confusion with other products.
2” – 10” QUARRY SPALLS: 2’ x 10” Quarry Spalls is both bigger and smaller than the similar 4” – 8” Quarry Rock product. This is a great product for firming up a very wet or muddy site. It can be used for construction entrances, though be aware of the fact that 2” – 10” does not meet the tighter specifications which are generally required for construction entrances. The term “spall” refers to a rock that has been broken through a mechanical process into a moderately large size.
HALF MAN / ONE MAN QUARRY ROCK: Half Man and One Man Quarry Rock are typically 25 lbs. to 200 lbs. angular shaped rocks with dimensions varying from 6” to 18”. A typical Half Man rock ranges in size from a large melon to a small watermelon. A One Man rock is typically about the size of a basketball up to the size of a medium beach ball. The terms “Half Man” and “One Man” are often the source of some confusion and it is strongly encouraged to view the rock size before ordering it sight unseen.
BOULDERS: We carry both rounded boulders and large angular rock, which are sometimes called “One Man”, “Two Man”, “Three Man” or even larger size rocks. The term “boulder” generally refers to a round shaped and smooth surfaced gravel, while broken or angular rocks are generally termed “Quarry Rock”.
